Philosophy and Method of Training

At Savvy Canines our motto is “Positive Learning for People and Dogs.” We believe that dog training should be effective and enjoyable for both humans and canines. Therefore, we use only safe, gentle methods that have been proven effective through many years of behavioral research and real-life application. Dog training has gone through many changes over the years, and Savvy Canines is dedicated to the continuing education of trainers in order to stay abreast of the latest information available.

We use a method of training called clicker training. Clicker training is a type of “marker” training; so called because the sound of the clicker clearly indicates (“”marks”) for the animal the exact behavior that the trainer wants. It is as if the trainer is taking a snapshot of the desired behavior. This type of training has long been used in zoos to teach animals to willingly participate in the regular tasks of their care, and with marine mammals for their regular care and to teach them those amazing tricks.

In our program, clients learn how to precisely communicate with their dogs in a positive way by use of the clicker. They also learn how to notice what their dogs are “saying” to them. Dogs have various ways of communicating, such as through body language and vocalizations, and part of our training program is practice in observing and interpreting these signals. This two-way communication between dog and person builds and strengthens the bond between them and leads to solid human/canine teamwork! It’s hard work, but also lots of fun, and filled with the thrills of progress. Along the way, clients learn how to deal with setbacks, which are a normal part of any learning process. Another benefit of working with Savvy Canines is the camaraderie of other teams who are working toward similar goals. You’re part of a family here!
